Karen Hayes, a young wife and mother, moves to the suburbs of Connecticut with her husband and six year old daughter to escape New York City life and begin anew. An urban woman of Swedish immigrants, never exposed to American suburbia, she eagerly makes her best effort to assimilate. Plagued by her new environment and isolation, Karen succumbs to her negative thinking which is exacerbated by her newfound relationship with her neighbor. Susan, who she reluctantly befriends, seeps into Karen’s psyche, dominating and disrupting Karen’s relationships with her family and friends. Despite Susan’s powerful influence, Karen attempts to maintain some kind of understanding of her own worsening behavior. But as she begins to lose this struggle to keep a grasp on herself, she also begins to project it externally to the point that her internal conflict alters her reality. Karen, in her sharp and painful demise, becomes but a mere witness to her own life spiraling out of control with little ability to determine her own destiny.
